Iringa is an interesting and historical town. Though known as the gateway to Ruaha National Park, Iringa has several historical & natural sites which visitors can find interesting.
The town was originally established as a military station by the Germans in 1896 (Neu Iringa) as they were searching for Chief Mkwawa who had evaded them after the fall of Kalenga (Alt Iringa). The British took the town in 1916 during WW1 and stayed as colonial administrators until independence in 1961. You can still see the German & British influence on Iringa (look for houses with chimneys).
The Talking Rock where the famous Chief Mkwawa worshiped with his warriors seeking counsel from the spirits before battle. Used as to observe the German military station at Iringa.
The Boma Located in the heart of Iringa in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania, Iringa Boma is a place of stories. Stories about Iringa in the past and in the present.
Located on the edge of Iringa town with more than 30 naturalistic human & animal figures, these red ochre bantu style paintings have been dated to the Iron Age (3000 yrs ago)
